NY Times Critics' Pick for John Kelly's TIME NO LINE

"Mr. Kelly packs a lot in about 75 minutes, yet he also knows when to let things breathe and he performs songs to signal both parenthesis and emphasis."

___

"Kelly, still lithe and gorgeous in his sixties, exudes charm and brilliance...As he shares his artistic inspirations and legacy, he crafts new work before our eyes—chalk drawings, evocative movements, duets with his younger self via archival video—simultaneously deconstructing and demonstrating the creative impulse."
- Raven Snook, Time Out New York

"This production hit me on a cellular level and I left the theater forever changed by [John Kelly's] ability to raise one’s frequency to the stratosphere."

Hildegard (vision) is a Time Out Critic's Pick!

Time Out New York has named Pioneers Go East Collective's Hildegard (vision) a Critics' Pick!

"The 12th-century composer Hildegard Von Bingen was a botanist and (some historians say) an epileptic given to trances and visions that were ruled by Pope Eugene III to be divinely inspired. The Pioneers Go East Collective has set out to replicate her exaltations of religious fervor in an hourlong immersive performance and installation piece that runs for a dozen performances in December."
Don't miss the World Premiere of this theater-music work, running from December 3 - 20, 2015 at The First Floor Theater @ La MaMa.

And here is a first look at the show:

Reviews are in for SHANK'S MARE

"For the first time in ages, the venerable La MaMa has opened a new performance space. The Downstairs is another of the venue's brick-lined, tin-ceilinged exquisites, though this one is tucked away in the basement, a snug little wine cave where some of us sit on low benches. Before the equally miniature and enchanting Shank's Mare, two four-foot-tall Japanese puppets perform a ceremonial dance, the sanbaso, to welcome this new stage into being. The operators sit behind them on small rolling boxes—a technique known as kuruma ningyo—stamping the puppets' feet, turning the floor into sacred space by treading on it in just the right way."

- Helen Shaw, Time Out New York

- - - - -

"Tom Lee and Koryu Nishikawa V’s Shank’s Mare at La MaMa’s new space, The Downstairs, is an opportunity to see some rare artistry at work...beautifully executed puppetry, visual effects and evocative music."
- Alison Walls, Exeunt Magazine

- - - - -

"This elaborate ninety-minute produc- tion is a collaboration of Japanese Master Puppeteer Koryu Nishikawa V of Japan and his American pupil, Pup- peteer-Designer-Director Tom Lee. A blend of Eastern and Western tradi- tions, this piece introduces us to a brand-new form of Puppetry for to- day's audiences. It features hand- some puppets created in Japan and the US, ex- quisitely detailed miniature sets, live feed video projection, live musical accompaniment. . . and no spoken dialog."
- Puppet Master Magazine

- - - - -

"The puppetry with which these characters are brought to life is something close to magic and the magician at the helm is Nishikawa, the fifth generation headmaster of the 160-year-old traditional puppet theatre company, Hachioji Kuruma Ningyo. The puppets here, each one with distinct features and fine detail, are American-made by an obviously talented crew of carvers and designers."
- A. C. Wright, Stage Buddy

- - - - -

"Shank’s Mare, created by Tom Lee and Koryu Nishikawa V, is a puppet show using video, miniaturization, actors and music, all blended together for an enchanting evening mixing the Eastern and Western culture. You will be mesmerized by these stories and the way they are told...This show should not be missed."
- James Chladek, Times Square Chronicles

Time Out NY Reviews THIS IS WINSOME BROWN

Time Out New York's Raven Snook covers Winsome Brown's solo
performance, This Is Mary Brown - now playing through June 28, 2015:

"A versatile performer on a near-empty stage, Brown inhabits more than a dozen characters, including her mum, her Alaskan frontiersman dad, Toronto-bred siblings and herself, shifting adeptly among them with slight but effective tweaks in voice and stance...a fitting tribute to the title mom, and all the flawed mothers who still toil away uncelebrated."

Mokwha Repertory Company's TEMPEST has arrived in NYC!

The Tempest is RECOMMENDED by Time Out New York this week!

...and featured on NY1's Your Weekend Starts Now

"The Mokwha Repertory Company from Seoul, Korea, will only be playing Taesuck Oh’s adaptation of The Tempest until Sunday, November 23. The last time the director, playwright, and company founder was at La Mama was over 35 years ago—which may make seeing this refreshing, shortened version of Shakespeare’s play (it’s 90 minutes) something of an imperative. Oh is one of Korea’s leading theatre artists, and his productions have won awards and honors around the world—including a 2011 Herald Angel Award at the Edinburgh International Arts Festival....There is a purity to this production no one should have wait almost forty years to see again on the New York stage."
- Stage Voices

"Mia Yoo has designed a series of programs titled LaMama Earth as a kind of response to Hurricane Sandy and our growing awareness of the power of, well, Mama Earth. This is an important production to have in the lineup. And more so than any Western production has the capability of, we are made aware of nature's hold on humanity. This Tempest is populated with a menagerie of animals with spirited, mischievous tendencies. What a wonderful thought to bring this obvious addition to Prospero’s magic island. They sing of the natural world and the errors of its abandonment. Along with Prospero’s final (and nearly only intact Shakespearean line) “let your indulgence set me free” we are told that whenever we are troubled, know there is a gentle breeze coming. The tempestuous winds that can harm in hellish ways will ease and subside into cooler, calmer times."
