“Compelling, engaging and entertaining”
- John Smythe, Theatreview

“The unpredictable theatricality of Playground Collective wins the day”
- Laurie Atkinson, The Dominion Post

“Bursting with ideas, the work provokes a myriad of responses from its audience; most seem divided between reaching for the tissues and laughing hysterically.”
- Sam Philips, The Lumiere Reader

“This is a highly original, carefully-wrought production deserving of high praise.”
- Michael Pohl, Salient

Simon studies video game design, looks after his pet rats, and keeps himself glued to whatever screen is nearest—all to avoid thinking about the recent death of his father. But Simon’s world is turned upside down when a mysterious box is delivered to him that might just contain the Secret to the Universe... An acclaimed new theatre work by writer Eli Kent and director Robin Kerr of the award-winning PlayGround Collective.

Artist Spotlight: David Goldthorpe of CHET BAKER: LIKE SOMEONE IN LOVE

New Zealand actor David Goldthorpe explores both the haunting, unforgettable music that made jazz legend Chet Baker famous and the visceral, self-destruction that made him infamous. He takes the audience on a gripping ride through the highs and lows of Baker’s life, interspersing the dialogue with expertly arranged Baker classics played live with a full three piece jazz band.

Video Teaser for PROPHETIKA: AN ORATORIO

Part theatrical event, part visual art installation, part ritual ceremony, Prophetika: An Oratorio proposes a mythical cosmology of colliding reflections on freedom and a view of the current state of our world. Inspired by Harriet Tubman’s journey from enslavement to liberation; the cosmic philosophies and improvisational style of Sun Ra; Alice Coltrane’s consciousness rising devotional music and the mysterious invading black monoliths in Stanley Kubrick’s classic sci-fi film 2001: Space Odyssey. It unfolds as a countdown to tomorrow, a road map to human destiny, a quest for the infinite from within.

"'Judgment on a Gray Beach' is one of the most visually striking theater pieces I've seen in a long time. We're presented with highly sophisticated absurdist humor combined with wink and nod Kafkaesque literary references.

Preview of upcoming PROPHETIKA

A special sneak preview presentation of Prophetika: An Oratorio happened at Snug Harbor on Staten Island and SILive.com covered the event:

"The 60-minute piece, destined for a La Mama run this spring, evokes three historic figures: Jazz musicians Sun Ra and Alice Coltrane, and abolitionist Harriet Tubman.   Ancient Egypt, a touchstone for all three, was a prominent design theme."

Throwback Thursday: Elia Schneider's 2000 Production of ROOMS at La MaMa

Elia Schneider returns to La MaMa this week with the show Judgment on a Grey Beach.  Elia was last at La MaMa in 2000, with the show Rooms which she wrote and directed.

The NY Times said of that show:
"To feel such exhilaration and despair at once is a rare epiphany. And it strikes one afterward that the story could have easily been about three men or a mixture of sexes. Ms. Schneider is faithful to Kafka in her imagination; her concern is all of humanity."

You may read the full NY Times review of RoomsHERE

Take a look at these rare photos of the production of Rooms from 2000:
