NY Times Loves NELLA TEMPESTA

The New York Times' Ben Brantley came to see Nella Tempesta last night and his review is already on line.  He loved it, and you will too!

“'Nella Tempesta,' which runs through Dec. 21 at the Ellen Stewart Theater at La MaMa, is a full-throated cry to the young and disaffected to get off their collective duffs, shake off their shackles and do something. Conceived and directed by Daniela Nicolò and Enrico Casagrande, this production turns a cast of six and an assortment of blankets into an 80-minute youthquake that seems likely to leave even cynical audience members shaken and stirred."
"There was a time, a half-century ago, when such rough-hewed, kinetically charged, politically aggressive theater was common in New York. And “Nella Tempesta” quivers with vibrations from that time. It seems only right that the production should be staged at La MaMa, which has a history of convention-flouting theater in the raw that dates to the early 1960s, and that its soundscape includes the recorded voice of Judith Malina, a founder of the iconoclastic Living Theater."
"The third installment of La MaMa’s season of plays inspired by “The Tempest” (which included a New York-grown version and an import from South Korea), “Nella Tempesta” is openly didactic and exhortative in ways seldom encountered in American theater these days. It doesn’t pretend to have any answers to the crises of environmental degradation, war, famine and racism that the world faces."
"What it does do is convey the belief that nothing will come of nothing, as another tyrant out of Shakespeare, King Lear, observed — that stasis breeds only more stasis. Tempests may destroy, but they have the virtue of sweeping people into action. And for as long as this determined, resourceful company is in extravagant, unceasing motion onstage, you may even believe that world-shaking change is possible after all."

Mokwha Repertory Company's TEMPEST has arrived in NYC!

The Tempest is RECOMMENDED by Time Out New York this week!

...and featured on NY1's Your Weekend Starts Now

"The Mokwha Repertory Company from Seoul, Korea, will only be playing Taesuck Oh’s adaptation of The Tempest until Sunday, November 23. The last time the director, playwright, and company founder was at La Mama was over 35 years ago—which may make seeing this refreshing, shortened version of Shakespeare’s play (it’s 90 minutes) something of an imperative. Oh is one of Korea’s leading theatre artists, and his productions have won awards and honors around the world—including a 2011 Herald Angel Award at the Edinburgh International Arts Festival....There is a purity to this production no one should have wait almost forty years to see again on the New York stage."
- Stage Voices

"Mia Yoo has designed a series of programs titled LaMama Earth as a kind of response to Hurricane Sandy and our growing awareness of the power of, well, Mama Earth. This is an important production to have in the lineup. And more so than any Western production has the capability of, we are made aware of nature's hold on humanity. This Tempest is populated with a menagerie of animals with spirited, mischievous tendencies. What a wonderful thought to bring this obvious addition to Prospero’s magic island. They sing of the natural world and the errors of its abandonment. Along with Prospero’s final (and nearly only intact Shakespearean line) “let your indulgence set me free” we are told that whenever we are troubled, know there is a gentle breeze coming. The tempestuous winds that can harm in hellish ways will ease and subside into cooler, calmer times."

Video Preview: Nella Tempesta

The Italian company Motus returns to La MaMa with NELLA TEMPESTA, the third and final production of La MaMa's TEMPEST 3 series.

Nella Tempesta creates a short circuit between Shakespeare’s The Tempest and Une Tempête by Aimé Césaire. Reflecting on the turmoil in our society and the consequences of the economic crisis, the performance also speaks about storms in the Mediterranean Sea, which are sinking the migrants ships that set sail from the coast of North Africa to reach Europe—“Brave new world,” to quote Miranda and Aldous Huxley. This version of The Tempest imagines the play about a world not as it appears to be ending, but a world on the verge of a new beginning.

The Villager covers TEMPEST 3 + WHAT TAMMY NEEDS TO KNOW... teaser

Trav S.D. recently covered TEMPEST 3 in an article for The Villager titled:

"A Tempest Trilogy Galvanized by Sandy's Tide."

Here are some of our favorite quotes:
"In these times of multiple daily apocalypses (environmental, biological, socio-political), there are an infinite number of possible human responses... But there is an older, more calming reaction we can have in the face of crisis: we can exorcise the bad demons through art. That would appear to be the tack La MaMa is taking this season with its trilogy of shows collectively branded “Tempest 3: The Tide is Rising.”
"The current version is a faithful interpretation of the play, with Swados’ eclectic score ranging from the avant-garde to the blues, and Koonrod making full use of the height, depth and breadth of the cavernous Ellen Stewart Theatre... Cathey’s Prospero was one of the most moving Shakespeare performances this writer has seen, and Coonrod’s two-hour production moved at such a clip, with such constant invention and such clarity of storytelling, I never regretted a minute of it. (How often can you say that?)"

TEMPEST 3: The Tide is Rising

The centerpiece of La MaMa's 53rd Season: LA MAMA EARTH will be Tempest 3: The Tide is Rising comprised of three very diverse productions of Shakespeare's final play, each from a unique perspective:

October 2 -November 2, 2014
TEMPEST
The world-premiere of a new production of TEMPEST, adapted and directed by Karin Coonrod, with music by La MaMa veteran composer Elizabeth Swados (La MaMa Cantata, RunawaysKaspar Hauser). The international and intergenerational cast will feature Reg. E. Cathey (The Wire and House of Cards) as Prospero, and the 14-year-old star of Broadway's Billy Elliot, Joseph Harrington as Ariel. Director Coonrod notes similarities between Prospero's world and ours today, noting, "Prospero re-enacts power games on an island - just as Manhattan is an island - and it is the non-human Ariel who is fascinated by humanity's power to love and reminds Prospero of his humanity. The play demonstrates a juxtaposition of time present and timelessness - hence, we will begin the play with a pendulum swinging: a signal of impending disaster and a reminder of time moving forward. A warning."

Tickets: $40 Adults; $30 Students/Seniors. 10 @ $10 tickets are available for this performance, in advance only.

Fall 2014 @ La MaMa: LA MAMA EARTH

We are so happy to announce that the 2014-2015 season at La MaMa will be called LA MAMA EARTH and will focus on climate change, environmental and social issues.

The LA MAMA EARTH theme materialized as a result of the up-close and personal impact that individuals and entire communities experienced from the widespread devastation of Hurricane Sandy in 2012. Articstic Director Mia Yoo said: “When former Mayor Bloomberg responded to a reporter's question at a press conference with the simple statement, 'The tide is rising,' it struck such a chord with me. La MaMa is honored to have the opportunity to present an American, Korean and Italian production of Shakespeare's bracing play, THE TEMPEST – each of which brings a unique cultural perspective to the environmental and social crises we all face.”

The centerpiece of LA MAMA EARTH will be three diverse, international productions of William Shakepeare's THE TEMPEST – productions of the play from the U.S., Korea and Italy. The trio of TEMPESTS will be presented under the collective title Tempest 3: The Tide is Rising and is comprised of the following: THE TEMPEST directed by Karin Coonrod with original music by Elizabeth Swados; Korea's Mokwha Repertory Company production of THE TEMPEST and NELLA TEMPESTA by Italy’s Motus Theatre.

Tempest 3 Packages available: See all three TEMPEST productions for only $60, if purchased before September 15th ($100 value if purchased separately).  Click Here to purchase a 3-show package!
