Material Witness by Spiderwoman Theater open this Thursday, May 12, 2016. The piece addresses the searing issue of violence against Indigenous women. Their
stories range from encounters with everything from stalking, to domestic
violence, to rape. But far from hitting the audience over the head with
tragedy, tales are conveyed subtly, artfully, sometimes even humorously, from a
perspective of frank assurance and empowerment. All are woven together through
interconnecting layers of language, images, and dance, creating a theatrical
collage.
Above are photos of the set instillation, which is itself another type of collage, including handmade quilts. Come see Material Witness, at The First Floor Theatre at La MaMa through May 29, 2016, only.
