Playwright, director and choreographer Pascal Rambert took a moment out from putting the finishing touches on A (micro) history of world economics, danced to answer 6 QUESTIONS from La MaMa.

1. What was the original inspiration for this piece?
A photo in a french news paper of a family evicted from their house in Detroit.

2. This show has been performed all over the world, using local performers. How much does it change from country to country?
The frame stays the same but it changes a lot because of the personalities of the participants.

3. What have you learned from creating this show?
That utopia is not dead.

4. How would you describe your aesthetic?
Get the complex out of the simplest on stage.

5. What are you doing when not working?
Work.

6. What does working in New York City and at La MaMa mean to you?
I feel connected.

Pascal Rambert is currently rehearsing his A (micro) history of world economics, danced at the Great Jones Street Rehearsal Studios with the New York City cast. The show opens Friday, October 11th, but we got to sit in on a recent rehearsal and here is a sneak peek of what promises to be an amazing piece.

Pascal Rambert Talks to Time Out NY

French director, Pascal Rambert talks to Time Out New York's Gia Kourlas about A (micro) history of world economics, danced - which comes to the Ellen Stewart Theatre on October 11th as part of the Crossing The Line Festival.

"French director Pascal Rambert has a singular touch when it comes to blending dance and theater. In A (micro) history of world economics, danced—which has existed in various incarnations in different cities since its 2010 premiere—Rambert looks at the effect of the current economy on a group of 50 local performers. Through writing, reading and moving, they share their stories inside of Rambert’s trademark theatrical structure: a white floor, fluorescent lighting and succinct direction that never veers into sentimentality yet, all the same, makes you feel. He spoke about the New York version of the show, which is coproduced by the French Institute Alliance Français, La MaMa and Performance Space 122 as part of Crossing the Line."

Conceived at the height of the European economic crisis, A (micro) history of world economics, danced explores our collective economic history over centuries. Created with and circulating around the lives of anonymous, locally sourced performers – a ballet of raw bodies share their own histories in the larger history of economics – tall, short, young, old, of different ethnicities and ancestry on stage, as one community, to make meaning of a crisis. 


A (micro) history of world economics, danced is co-presented by La MaMa, Performance Space 122 and the French Institute Alliance Française (FIAF)’s Crossing the Line 2013 Festival.
