Although he is best known in the US as a filmmaker, Pier Paolo Pasolini, is known throughout Europe a leading intellectual, working not only in film but poetry, journalism, visual art, literature and theater. Pasolini wrote six plays, of which Pylede is one.

Pasolini often returned to classical texts: Medea, Oedipus Rex and the Oresteia, from which Pylade is derived.
He was murdered, in 1975, by being run over multiple times with his own car and his body had been partially burned. Although a male hustler was arrested and eventually confessed to the murder, other theories surrounding the murder exist.
