Brooklyn Rail chats with Nicky Paraiso!

"Nicky’s new full-length work, now my hand is ready for my heart: intimate histories, is opening on March 22. I’ve been following its progress from the Kickstarter (I gave) and online. Nicky is my friend since we met serving on the Honorary Awards Committee for the NY Innovative Theatre Awards. He’s a writer, performer, and essential curator, mostly of dance work at La MaMa. His curatorial work has occupied him greatly the last two decades, and he felt the need to return to his own creative work. He’s made a piece that’s autobiographical, telling the stories of his life through word and dance."

Video Preview: 55 SHADES OF GAY

From Kosovo, Qendra Multimedia's 55 Shades of Gay: Balkan Spring of Sexual Revolution is a contemporary burlesque story about LGBTI politics in the Balkans and Europe by acclaimed Kosovar playwright Jeton Neziraj. In a historically homophobic environment, local Balkan politicians try to manipulate and deceive EU officials; humanitarian mercenaries of international NGOs exploit intolerance for economic gains; and EU officials use their superior financial and political positions to subjugate everyone. This provocative, politically incorrect performance poses the question, “Is sexual liberation possible in the Balkans?”

Jack Reynolds: language like lava

@ SPRING/BREAK Art Show NYC

Exploring ideas of representation and information, while playing with expectations based on historical formatting, Jack Reynolds situates imagery within a complicated space of language, form, and mark-making.

SPRING/BREAK Art Show is an internationally recognized exhibition platform using underused, atypical and historic New York City exhibition spaces to activate and challenge the traditional cultural landscape of the art market, typically but not exclusively during Armory Arts Week. The eighth annual exhibition will be held from March 5th  – March 11th, 2019.

Progress Report: 74 East 4th Street Capital Project

If you've walked by 74 East 4th Street lately, you've seen La MaMa's beloved building and first permanent home is being renovated as part of a multi-phase capital project.

To everyone's surprise, windows that no one knew were there were revealed on the west wall of The Club.  If these walls could talk...

When the project is finished, 74 East 4th Street will be handicapped accessible with the installation of an elevator and the lowering of the street entrance so there is no longer a step.   This renovation was long over-due to insure that the building will be available to everyone for years to come.
