Raven Snook spoke with Lois Weaver (a/k/a Tammy WhyNot) about her new show currently at The First Floor Theatre at La MaMa:

"I’ve used a talk-show format for Tammy shows in the past, but this time I wanted to push myself; this is the most singing Tammy has ever done in a show. The premise is she’s preparing for a concert tour for her comeback album, which is all about getting older and having sex. The audience members are my VIP guests, and I’m running through the songs in advance of the actual performance. I like to think of it as a sound check, which is a great metaphor for life: We work and work and work and finally get it all together, and then the show is over."

Video Preview: Nella Tempesta

The Italian company Motus returns to La MaMa with NELLA TEMPESTA, the third and final production of La MaMa's TEMPEST 3 series. 

Nella Tempesta creates a short circuit between Shakespeare’s The Tempest and Une Tempête by Aimé Césaire. Reflecting on the turmoil in our society and the consequences of the economic crisis, the performance also speaks about storms in the Mediterranean Sea, which are sinking the migrants ships that set sail from the coast of North Africa to reach Europe—“Brave new world,” to quote Miranda and Aldous Huxley. This version of The Tempest imagines the play about a world not as it appears to be ending, but a world on the verge of a new beginning.

The Jewish Voice takes a look at the upcoming production of THE KING OF HEARTS IS OFF AGAIN coming to The First Floor Theater @ La MaMa:

"The play is the real-life story of a Jewish woman, Izolda Regenberg, who set out to save her husband from the Warsaw Ghetto and Auschwitz by disguising herself and living as an Aryan. She succeeded. The story of their survival—through bribery, terror, rapes, escapes from death camps, prostitution and more—is staged with four actors playing 22 parts. Facing unimaginable situations, love becomes Izolda's sole means of survival as her own identity becomes obsolete. Her epic journey between 1943 and 1968 is told through a patchwork of scenes, with compact dialogue that is translated in supertitles. The production employs dance-like movement that is often tempestuous, ritualistic, and so expressive that the supertitles often seem superfluous."
